I have a deep appreciation for fresh beginnings, especially the one that comes with September. For years, my own “fresh starts” were often triggered by binge eating, post-holiday excess, or the aftermath of Christmas indulgence. Back then, they represented a desperate glimmer of hope in the middle of weight gain and self-discontent. My approach was rigid—strict diets and punishing workouts to “make up” for choices I regretted.

Does this resonate with you?

These days, I’ve broken free from that old cycle. My perspective has shifted, and I’ve found healthier, more sustainable ways to reset without punishing myself. But here’s the truth: I still love the energy of a fresh start.

Why? Because there’s something invigorating about beginning again. None of us are perfect—myself included—and there’s always space to refocus, rebuild, or step forward in a new way. A fresh start is not about erasing the past. It’s about honoring where you’ve been while intentionally choosing where you’re going.

And while we technically can begin again any time—on a Monday, the first of the month, or even right after a tough day—there’s something deeply human about aligning these resets with natural markers. That’s why September stands out.

Why September, Not January?

ree

January is often sold as the ultimate restart button. But let’s be honest—it rarely sets us up for success. Cold, gray weather. Short days. Comfort food everywhere. The gyms are packed for two weeks before motivation fizzles out.

September, on the other hand, feels alive. The air is crisp, the sunlight golden, the days vibrant. It’s easier to lace up your sneakers, take a walk, or commit to a new rhythm when the world outside is inspiring. And symbolically, this season makes sense. Kids are back in school. Summer distractions fade. It feels like the perfect moment to reset routines and finish the year strong.

In many ways, September has become the new January.

What Do You Need to Release?

Autumn teaches us something profound: to grow, we must let go. Just as trees release their leaves, we too have to drop what no longer serves us—habits, fears, stories, or even relationships that weigh us down.

Letting go isn’t failure. It’s wisdom. It’s strength. It’s making space for what actually nourishes and inspires you.

So as you move into September, pause and ask yourself:

What do I need to let go of?

Start by creating a “Stop Doing List”

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to first decide what you’re leaving behind. Instead of only piling on new goals, create a “Stop Doing List.” Write down the habits, distractions, or mindsets that drain your energy and no longer serve you. By naming them, you take away their power. A Stop Doing List clears the space you need for growth, focus, and the things that actually matter.

Three Reflective Questions for Your September Reset

If you’re ready to claim your fresh start, try sitting with these prompts: That one question can open the door to transformation.

  1. What motivates me to pursue this goal?

Get clear on your “why.” When the going gets tough, it’s your deeper motivation—not willpower—that will keep you moving.

  2. In what ways will I hold myself accountable?

Accountability could be tracking your progress, telling a friend, or keeping a journal. Whatever it is, define it and stick to it.

  3. What is the very first step I can take?

Big goals can feel overwhelming. Break them down. Pick one tangible action to begin. That first step often builds the momentum you need.

A Tool to Help You Stay on Track

Fresh starts are exciting—but sticking with them requires tools that keep you inspired and accountable. One of my favorites is Robin Arzón’s guided journal, Welcome, Hustler. It’s filled with reflection prompts, motivational quotes, and practical exercises to help you channel your energy into real progress.

Final Thoughts

Fresh Start September is not about perfection. It’s about possibility. It’s about releasing what drags you down, realigning with what matters, and choosing to finish your year stronger than you started.

So take a breath, welcome the season, and remember—every fresh start is a gift. The question is: what will you do with yours?
