Closet to Costume: Last-Minute Halloween Looks + Local Fun
Halloween is days away, and if your costume plan is still "I'll figure it out," you're in good company. Here are four looks you can pull together from your own closet, no costume-shop emergency required, plus two Richmond spots to show them off.
The one rule
Start with something you already own, then add one detail that makes the character obvious. That's it. We're going for clever, not a 2 a.m. craft-store meltdown.
I call that detail the hero detail: the one clue that tells everyone who you are before you say a word. Get it right and the rest of the outfit can be pretty ordinary. If you still want to order a piece or two, there's time, but you probably have most of these looks hanging in your closet right now.
Four looks you can pull together this week
Fairy Queen
All you really need is a formal gown. Yes, the bridesmaid dress you swore you'd wear again counts, and this is its redemption arc. Add wings, a mask, a wand and a few sparkly accessories, and boom: royalty. This one is a hit with little ones, so it works beautifully as a mother-daughter look.

Beach Ken
After the movie, there are more Ken options than ever. I went with Beach Ken, but pick whichever version speaks to you. The key Ken component is perfect hair. Pair that with the perfect counterpart beside you and Ken has officially arrived. The rest is attitude: act like your entire personality is having a great hair day. What does Beach Ken do for a living? Beach. It's a calling.
Hero detail: the sunglasses (and, honestly, the hair).
Barbie
Pull out a pink dress, a pink top, or even a pink blazer. Add heels, a bold lip and a little confidence. The confidence is free, and Barbie always has plenty of it. A coffee stain on that blazer? Call it Barbie on a deadline.

The '80s Rocker
Start with tight jeans, a band T-shirt and a leather or denim jacket. The key piece is a big, permed rock-star wig, which you can grab at a Halloween store or order on Amazon. Add boots and sunglasses, and bring your air guitar (bonus: it folds up really small). The wig does most of the heavy lifting. The confidence is your problem.
